How to Drill a Hole in a Ceramic Pot?

I’ll outline the 3 quick and simple steps for drilling your own drainage holes below.

Step 1: Find a Center Bit

Turn your pot on its side and drill from the outside in. As you begin drilling, make sure the pot is securely in place and won’t move.

To ensure that your hole is in the center, center your drill bit.

Step 2: Drill Your Hole

Drilling should be done slowly while maintaining a light pressure with your opposite hand on the drill’s top. This will prevent the bit from slipping.

The speed of your drill can be increased once you notice a hole beginning to form in your pot.

Drizzle water on the pot as you drill to prevent the drill bit from overheating and to aid in drilling through the surface.

Note: Depending on how tough your pot is, it may take some time to drill all the way through.

I can drill through in anywhere from 30 seconds to about 2 minutes on average.

Be patient because it takes a little longer and isn’t quite as simple as drilling through wood.

Try switching your drill to the hammer setting if you feel like the hole isn’t expanding; just drill slowly to avoid breaking the pot.

Step 3: Put the Drill Out

Gently remove the drill bit after drilling all the way through the pot.

How Many Holes Should You Add to a Pot?

To make sure water isn’t pooling on one side, I like to add two holes to any pot with a diameter of more than 8 inches.

If there is only one hole, drill it in the center; if there are two or more, drill them halfway between the center and the edge of the pot for greater stability.

In order to protect the strength of the ceramic in between them, you shouldn’t place 2 holes too close to one another.

Which Drill Bit to Use for Ceramic Pots?

The best drill bit to use for ceramic pots is one designed for tile and stone or glass and tile.

I currently have a Bosch Tile and Stone ½” drill bit that can drill through natural stone, granite, ceramic, and glass.

For the majority of pot sizes, a 1/2″ hole seems ideal because a drain hole that is too small may be easily clogged by stones or pieces of bark that are present in potting soil mixtures.

I cover the hole in the bottom of the pot with a larger stone, a piece of coconut coir plant lining, a screen, or weed mesh to stop soil from draining out but still allow water to pass through.

Can You Drill a Hole in a Ceramic Pot With a Regular Drill Bit?

A ceramic pot can be drilled using a standard drill bit. On unglazed ceramic, using a regular bit is much simpler. Glazed ceramic, which is what most store-bought pots are, will make it hard for the bit to “grab on” to the pot to start drilling the hole.

Additionally, even if you can drill through the exterior, using a regular drill bit on a ceramic pot increases the likelihood that the pot will crack. The hole’s appearance could be a little rougher, but I suppose that’s not really a problem for a drainage hole.

But since the better parts are so inexpensive, why not use one? Ask a helpful friend or family member if you don’t want to buy one. The drill bit I bought for ceramic, though, has more than paid for itself because I have so many plants!
